Obituary for Leroy Gibbs

Leroy Gibbs Sr., of Battle Creek, MI, passed away at home with his family by his side on Saturday, December 15, 2018. He was born July 24, 1948, is Nashville, TN, to the late Howard Gibbs Sr., and Hazel (Tinner) Gibbs.
The family moved to Battle Creek, MI, in 1954, where Leroy attended Battle Creek Public Schools and graduated from Battle Creek Central High in 1966. Leroy enlisted the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Norfolk Naval Base in Norfolk, VA. While stationed there, he met and married Delora Turner, his wife of 48 years. After his honorable discharge as a signalman, Leroy returned with his wife and son to Battle Creek. In 1971, he attended Kellogg Community College, where he earned a Certificate in Electronics.
Leroy worked at the Veterans Administration as a nursing assistant and retired October 31, 2008, with 44 years of service. Leroy enjoyed playing bingo, golf, and watching the Detroit Lions and The Tigers play. He loved being around his grandchildren and listening to music. He was also a skilled dancer.
He is survived by his wife Delora (Turner) Gibbs; son, Leroy (Tamera) Gibbs Jr.; daughters Renee Gibbs, Darlene Gibbs and Leslie (Leonardo) Fields; 5 grandsons; 6 granddaughters; 1 great-grandson; brothers, Howard (Peggy) Gibbs Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Laurence (Hattie) Gibbs of Battle Creek, MI, Leonard Gibbs of Germany and Dewitt (Sandra) Pullen of Nashville TN; sisters, Shirlene Gibbs-Shelby of Battle Creek, MI, Glenda Gibbs of Battle Creek, MI, Phyllis Gibbs and Joetta Alderson of Nashville, TN. Leroy also leaves to cherish a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, many cousins, including special cousins Anthony Gibbs Sr., Lonnie Watkins and Clarence Gibbs Sr., and friends.
